Those who know me know that I don't need an excuse to knit. But in between my larger projects or when I need a break from the larger projects, I enjoy knitting for a cause. I encourage you to find a cause close to your heart and make a difference in somebody's life. It is not only a gift to them but a gift to yourself. Some of my favorite causes to knit for are Halos of Hope, Knitted Knockers, and my local animal shelter.
Halos of Hope is committed to providing volunteer-crafted hats and toys to cancer centers across the country. I enjoyed knitting these creatures when Halos of Hope did the "Under the Sea" project for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta- Egleston and Scottish Rite.
Knitted Knockers are prosthetic breasts for mastectomy patients. When placed in a bra, these knitted breasts take the shape and feel of a real breast. They are lighter and more comfortable than silicone prosthetic breasts. The knitted fabric breathes and prevents the heat rash & discomfort experienced by many women wearing the silicone ones.
Bring comfort and security to shelter animals by knitting simple blankets. The blankets are more comfortable than a cold cage bottom and is something familiar that can go to the new home for the pet. The blankets also calm the animals when they first arrive at the shelter.
